  • Cervus canadensis [underlined] " June 27/43 [1943] Some sign (chawing + droppings) of elk at head of Mackay Creek in winter or at least early spring. - very few though perhaps 3 or 4 head. Vermilion Crossing [underlined]:- June 28/43 [1943]. Death - Predators [underlined]:- Along the Kootenay in 1920. Wm [William] Yearling found a dead bull elk + a dead Mt [Mountain] lion near each other. There had apparently been quite a fight + the lion was badly bruised + gored. The elk had got its antlers tangled in some roots + down timber finally + the lion had made the kill before dying. Reported by J.J. Meredith Census [underlined]:- 6 [female symbol] 1 [male symbol] 1 [male symbol] on slides near Blacks Camp. 1 [male symbol] 2 [female symbol] 1 calf. 1 [male symbol] yearling poor condition not yet finished moulting. 1 large [male symbol] 1 " [male symbol] 3 sex not known. Voice:- Cows have several different types of bark. One a short one coming down the scale + reproduceable with your tongue on roof of mouth + mouth closed - almost a loud whine, The other a monotone ow!.
