Census + behaviour.
Very hot day in the sun but
a breeze kept the shaded areas
cool.
I did not enter the area until
10 AM at which time all deer
were bedded + the Tabanids were
most active.
Put up 2 does + 1 fawn from
the edge of a small swampy
meadow adjoining Mavis Lake
They scented me before jumping
but then waited until they
saw me + went off across the
swamp on the jump - tails up.
These deer were bedded under
the upturned roots of a stump.
where the dust was thick + the
temperature just 52, 10 degrees lower
than the shade temperature.

abundant in the sun over the
meadow + made rapid flights
through the shaded margins
none of them were entering
the shaded beds.
At 11 A.M. saw a large buck
lying in the shade of a log right
out in the open mud flat
of Mavis Lake. I had been in
