The playing was magnificent + I hated to
see them file through the big gates.
The pipers were followed by complete
darkness + then as the lights came on
5 trumpeters of the Royal Netherlands Grenadiers
were in front of us. Their fanfare
was taken up by the rest of their
band + in they came - about 135 of
them in their splendid uniforms.
They put on a very good show +
marched again into the darkness.
Again the lights turned to the castle
gates + there, in solid phalanyx [phalanx] with
white hats, white sambrown's + seafords,
stood the R.A.F. [Royal Air Force] band + drill squad.
Their precision drill display will
be hard to equal. A hollow square
of 4 ranks 10 men on face went
through the most complicated routine
in perfect time, without a spoken command.
The french cavalry lacked
imagination but had about 50 very
lovely horses. The cavalry trumpet is
hardly a musical instrument + multiplying
it by 40 doesn't help much.
However the massed military bands
of the Scots Guards, Black Watch, Seaforths
+ Cameron Highlanders - 260 of them did
