- Camped at the Forestry Garage, Orvile [space left blank]
now being in charge.
Gathering in beer parlor in evening
with Athol [Atholl Sutherland Brown] + Ventures mine people + heli-
copter crew present. Last year they checked
Tom Wilsons Report of Elk on Louise I. [Island]
and every time they turned out to be
large deer. Perhaps no elk south of
Graham? Athol [Atholl Sutherland Brown] has been watching for
caribou but (of course) has seen none.
June 6 [1961]
Lovely sunny day so dried out our
tents, etc. [etcetera] on lawn, washed clothes +
organized collection.
Met Ken Poke, manager of Venture's
Iron-Copper mine down in Tasu sound.
A Queen's graduate + willing to give
us a lift down + hospitality for a
week. We might be able to get on
this Q.C.A. [Queen Charlotte Airlines] Flight Saturday.
In the evening boated from
Skidegate. No Falcons on Torrens I. [Island]
this year; Mike [Bigg] found a nest c [with] 4
young there last. - very few cormor-
ants about. Went to Skidegate +
hunted up Chuck Evans the trapper
logger with CZ [Crown Zellerbach]. Very helpful +
co-operative. Took us out to Grey
Bay to pick up 4 martin [marten] skulls +
2 otter. Trapped 10 otter + >40
martin [marten] last winter, former brought
$25-$40, latter about $5 each. Grossed
$600 in just over a months trapping
in spare time. Will be trapping this
winter too - has a brother in Jus
Katla beginning to trap too. Geo. [George] F.
Sahanovitch of Q.C.C. [Queen Charlotte City] also did a
bit of trapping last winter so we
shall look him up too.
Checked our whale skull + found
it uncovered but intact.
Got back lake bringing Ken [Poke] +
Jim (of Venture's) with us. Saw first
fawns (3 [?]) today.
June 7 [1961]
Over to Sandsit and picked up
12 small + 3 large jaw traps from Chuck
Evans. Got caught up on correspond
ance. Another gathering in beer parlor
to get to know piolets [pilots], + other useful contacts.
