This painting with the Tokugawa crest on the roller ends was painted by the fifteenth and last Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu. He gave it to his retainer, Muramatsu, whose descendant gave it to Reverend Crummy (1862-1939). After the death of shogun lemochi, Yoshinobu was chosen to succeed him. He tried unsuccessfully to reform the Tokugawa shogunate and was forced to resign. In his retirement, he kept a low profile in fear of assassination and engaged in many hobbies, including painting.
Ce rouleau aux armes des Tokugawa � chaque extremite a ete peint par le quinzieme et dernier shogun,Tokugawa Yoshinobu. II le donna � son serviteur, Muramatsu, dont les descendants le remirent au reverend Crummy (1862- 1939). Apres le deces du shogun lemochi, Yoshinobu fut choisi pour lui succeder. II tenta sans succes de reformer le shogunat Tokugawa et fut force de demissionner.
De crainte d'etre assassine, il se tint tranquille durant sa retraite et s�adonna � plusieurs passe-temps, dont la peinture.

This print was made to commemorate the important journey from Edo to Kyoto made in 1863 by the Tokugawa shogun lemochi (1846-66) who was summoned by the Emperor Komei. He was escorted by 3,000 retainers.
It marked the first time in 230 years that a shogun had visited the emperor in Kyoto. The shogun was summoned by the Emperor to discuss how to expel foreigners from the country, but this journey came to be seen as a sign of the weakening of the shogun's power.
Cette estampe commemorait I'important voyage d'Edo � Kyoto que fit le shogun Tokugawa lemochi (1846- 1866), en 1863, apres avoir ete convoque par I'empereur Komei. II etait escorte de 3 000 serviteurs. C�etait la premiere fois en 230 ans qu'un shogun rendait visite � I�empereur a Kyoto. L'empereur avait convoque le shogun pour discuter de la facon d�expulser les etrangers du pays, mais ce voyage finit par etre interprets comme un signe de faiblesse du shogunat.

Ryotai was born into a noble family in Aomori Prefecture.
He became a well-respected poet and painter.

Zeshin is regarded as the greatest lacquer artist of the 19th century and developed a new technique of painting with lacquer on silk and paper.

Kaioku was born into a samurai family and became an archery instructor. He became a well-known Confucian scholar, calligrapher and Nanga painter.
