  • 26. Tokugawa Yoshinobu (1837-1913) Mount Fuji / Mont Fuji Hanging scroll, ink and colour on silk Gift of Miss Margaret Crummy in memory of her father, the Reverend Eber Crummy AGGV 1977.235.001 p.40 This painting with the Tokugawa crest on the roller ends was painted by the fifteenth and last Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu. He gave it to his retainer, Muramatsu, whose descendant gave it to Reverend Crummy (1862-1939). After the death of shogun lemochi, Yoshinobu was chosen to succeed him. He tried unsuccessfully to reform the Tokugawa shogunate and was forced to resign. In his retirement, he kept a low profile in fear of assassination and engaged in many hobbies, including painting. II tenta sans succes de reformer le shogunat Tokugawa et fut force de demissionner. Mossier AGGV 2006.007.002 p.41 This print was made to commemorate the important journey from Edo to Kyoto made in 1863 by the Tokugawa shogun lemochi (1846-66) who was summoned by the Emperor Komei. He was escorted by 3,000 retainers. It marked the first time in 230 years that a shogun had visited the emperor in Kyoto. The shogun was summoned by the Emperor to discuss how to expel foreigners from the country, but this journey came to be seen as a sign of the weakening of the shogun's power.
