  • Journal. Jasper Alta. [Alberta] Dec. [December] 21/44 [1944] In morning worked on Old Fort with the sheep band there + in afternoon had car trouble + finally worked on elk + deer in the Lodge area. Jasper. Dec. [December] 22/44 [1944] Joined Frank Wells at 10 miles S [South] + we crossed the river + spent the day on Buffalo Prairie. There is a tremendous area of country there, with most of the western slopes of the ridges parched, treeless + almost barren of grass. These are heavily worked by sheep + elk. There are still a number of active beaver ponds but many of the older established colonies have been deserted as a result of the grazing off of the young aspens + the beaver culling of all the older trees. Saw otter sign in several places. Jasper. Dec. [December] 23/44 [1944]. In afternoon went down the west side of the Athabasca north of Maligne river. Here there is a mixture of aspen parkland and white spruce bottom. The latter shows signs of a fair rabbit population. The aspen parkland
