Jasper Alta. [Alberta] Dec. [December] 21/44 [1944]
In morning worked on Old Fort
with the sheep band there +
in afternoon had car trouble +
finally worked on elk + deer
in the Lodge area.
Jasper. Dec. [December] 22/44 [1944]
Joined Frank Wells at 10 miles
S [South] + we crossed the river + spent
the day on Buffalo Prairie. There
is a tremendous area of country
there, with most of the western
slopes of the ridges parched, treeless
+ almost barren of grass. These
are heavily worked by sheep
+ elk.
There are still a number of
active beaver ponds but
many of the older established
colonies have been deserted
as a result of the grazing off
of the young aspens + the beaver
culling of all the older trees.
Saw otter sign in several places.

In afternoon went down the west
side of the Athabasca north of
Maligne river. Here there is a
mixture of aspen parkland and
white spruce bottom. The latter
shows signs of a fair rabbit
population. The aspen parkland
