- Ursus horribilis. [underlined]
Jasper. May 11/45. [1945]
In the area between Medicine Lake +
Maligne Lake there are at present at
least 9 grizzlies as follows.
1 old male working Medicine Lake end
1 " [old] bear " [working] Maligne Lake end
1 young bear " " " " [working Maligne Lake end]
1 female with 2 yearlings killed an elk
2 miles up Medicine Lake on May 6
1 female with two newborn cubs seen
at upper end of Medicine on May 7.
All these on 17 miles of trail.
Frank Wells tells me that he today
found where a large grizzly had killed
an elk just across from the goat lick
at mile 27.
He also has a very good picture
of an old grizzly asleep on top of
a buried elk carcase [carcass]. He shot
the beast but it didn't move a muscle
So that its position in the photo
is accurate.
Watchman L. [Lake] July 27/45 [1945]
All over the hillsides here are abundant
signs of grizzly digging up Erythronium
bulbs for food. Some were dug in
the spring but others were uprooted
within the last week.
