The burrows away from
the road, + among the trees
The burrows in the open were
invariably inhabited by males
or yearlings, without families.
The young numbered in one
case 6 + in another 5 + were
very small. One young one,
surprised away from home,
elevated its tail over its back
+ walked about on its tip toes
until it manoeuvered about
so that it got me out of its
way, it then dashed for its
burrow + immediately put its
head out again to have a look
at me. The young were very
inquisitive + were not frightened
by bullets fired at them.
Some of the young appeared to
have their own burrows,
but these were invariably
near the main one + probably
joined it. I saw a chipmunk
eating dandelion leaves.
