  • Ursus horribilis Jasper, Alta [Alberta] - April 17/43 [1943] Frank Wells considers this bear the major predator of moose + cites instances. see Alces [underlined]. Reports having a black bear frothing at the mouth + with chest all foam flecked gallop past him while on fire duty up the Rocky. A few yards behind came a grizzly in hot pursuit - running fast but without the signs of distress of the black. Has seen 2 places where blacks have been killed by grizzlies. Reports chasing a young bear with 2 airdales + himself on horseback down a tote road near Talbot Lake. Bear distanced them without trouble. Jasper. April 21/43 [1943] Warden [Bob] Jones of Blue River reports seeing tracks of two grizzlies this week. Frank Wells reports a grizzly killed + ate a large [male symbol] goat at mile 24 in one night - spring of 1933 Banff, Alta [Alberta] April 26/43 [1943] Tracked an old grizzly 6 miles up the Spray river. from mile 9. Track fore 8" [inches], back 10" [inches] defecated once - elk hair, thin + shrivelled nasal septum. Broke into a run once apparently at a moose which ran hard for about a mile
