Microtus r. [richardonsi] macropus. Found some fresh cuttings
+ fresh diggings. These large microti seem to
prefer the banks of a rather swift streamlet
with steep banks. It appears to me that these
animals are moving up stream as
the growth of food plants advance.
Watched a falcon chasing a
golden eagle across valley. It repeatedly
struck at the eagle + both disappeared
in a northerly direction. Three black
swifts seen circling over rocky hill
+ valley west of ranger's cabin. Collected
a [female symbol] chipmunk which was sitting up
on a stone in the same manner as
the ground squirrels i.e. upright like a
tent peg. - Noticed some old
diggings where bear had dug out ground
squirrels. Caught two [female symbol] Pack rats
in rock slide + I think they have
been setting off the traps set for the
conies. In one instance the tie strings
were cut up + removed by these rats
as well as two red tags. All the animals
of this high elevation marmots, rats,
conies + microtus appear to be very
inactive at the present time + I think
become more active as the season
advances + the family cares increase.
In afternoon went with Ian [McTaggart Cowan] down to
meadows north west of camp + saw
numerous runways fresh cuttings
