- Ursus horribilis [underlined]
Miette May 10/44 [1944]
Saw a large, very dark female
with a yearling cub on the slopes
above Moosehorn Creek.
Willow Creek. May 23/44 [1944]
On the way in here we saw
fresh grizzly tracks at Shalebanks +
near here. Rufe Neighbor + Jud
Groat - outfitters express the conviction
that bear are increasing, particularly
east of the mountains. Neighbor
says he would never come into
the mountains after bear now, but
would bait them near his
ranch at Entrance.
Blue Creek. May 28/44. [1944]
Saw a medium sized, silver-tip grizzly
yesterday. It came down to the lake
to drink at about 11 AM. Later we
found its kill - a two year old
bull moose dead about a week
All the cow moose around the
lake are highly nervous, possibly
because of the presence of this bear
Topaz Shelter May 29/44. [1944]
A great deal of fresh digging + some
fairly fresh tracks along the way.
Byng Creek. May 31/44 [1944]
A dropping today included hair + hoof of
a calf moose - not a stillborn
Another dropping consisted of [illegible word].
