8 mi [miles] N. [north] Aklavik June 10/47 [1947]
Mr Boxer informs me that in
1945-46 winter when there was
so little snow, the rabbits mostly
left this country.
" [8 mi [miles] N. [north] Aklavik] June 12/47 [1947]
At 11 PM two rabbits came down
to the river bank across from
us. Both had their backs brown
but sides, underparts + all four
feet white.
Willows on the lake edges are
browsed as by an ungulate.
Winter 1945-46 they were very
abundant here.
55 mi [miles] N.W. [northwest] Aklavik. June 24/47 [1947]
Rabbits must have been in plague
proportions here this last winter.
I have never seen so much
cutting. The creekside willows
are many of them browsed down
to butts 1/2" [inch] diameter, taller ones
are barked as high as the animals
could reach. Alder bark + twigs
were eaten also. Remains of
rabbits + bits of fur are
everywhere.
Same Local. [locality] [underlined] June 25/47 [1947]
I must have seen 50 rabbit carcases [carcasses]
+ bits of such today. Many eagle
pellets + owl pellet containing nothing
