Aug [August] 4. Field. B.C. [British Columbia]
Warm with some heavy showers.
Today we drove by way of the
Ice River tote road to the Ice River
+ then hiked up this river a distance
of some 5 miles.
The country along the Beaverfoot
river is most interesting. There are
several muskeg meadows, some
of them fairly extensive. Two of
them bear small lakes that are
surrounded by Carex + small
patches of Scirpus. On one of
these 4 mallards were seen. Rana
pretiosa, Thamnophis o [ordinoides] vagrans + [underlined]
Bufo boreas [underlined] taken.
The forest consists of an
old overmature stand of widely
scattered Douglas fir. Beneath these
is a heavy stand of spruce
+ Douglas fir up to 30 to 50 ft [feet]
in height + tall aspens with
locally considerable numbers of
birch. Nearer Ice River are [word crossed out] is an
area in which [illegible word] Cedar is
quite common.
The undergrowth in the more
open areas features alder, red osier
dogwood, Shepherdia + Menziesia. Rose.
the low growing raspberry (Dewberry) + strawberry
are the berry producers with Lonicera
