  • May 29- cloudy Nothing in traps so picked them all up. Found winter wren's nest 4' up in side of rotten root. Contained 5 very young babies. Had noticed that the crows on Fred- erick seemed bigger, and "cawed" rather than "cahed". So called in a mob + shot one as a specimen. At 7 am went out on rocks in front of camp to search for ab- olonie [abalone] as a low tide today. No luck. Collected few Mitilis [Mytilus] [underlined] instead. In the evening the "Western Trader" blew its whistle for us. They would try to call back for us in 3 days but a S.E.er [southeaster] might disrupt that plan. While the crew visited the beach we hunted for, and found, the falcons nest N. [north] of here. Most odd : simply under roots at the top of a 60' grassy bank. Contained 4 large young - pin feathers just showing. Two more eagles nests today: one 70' up spruce on beautiful beach just N. [north] of here on Graham., second on N. [north] end of Frederick up dead stub. Family of wrens just out of nest Set 100 traps on Graham + 25 on Frederick May 30 [1961] Dullish Another abortive attempt for abolonie [abalone] While picking up traps ran into Athol [Atholl] S. [Sutherland] Brown + chopper. They were inspecting costal [coastal] stratigraphy: had just noticed about 300 sea lion on Joseph Rk. [Rock] Caught 6 mice on Graham (saw 1 Sorex) and one on Frederick. One Graham had faint stripe on belly. Two trollers came in to the Bay in the evening. We raced out to see whe- ther they could give us a lift to Langara but found they planned to work south for a few days. Evening deer hunt a failure. Deer seem very shy here. Found 2 more crows' nests: 3 eggs on ground under small spruce, + 2 large young on top of 6' stump covered with salal. Noticed first robin today. Hairy wdpkr [woodpecker] for sparrows also [words crossed out] sapsucker also about Crossbills (ww [white-winged]?), siskins, wrens, h. [hermit] thrush, crows, eagles common.
