  • 61 Immediately around the lake the cover is much as it is at Balsam Lake viz. Balsam, Spruce and Mt. [Mountain] Hemlock, with Azalea on the s. [south] slope and heather on the north facing slope. The trees rapidly give way to broken rock slides of huge boulders, these become finer and with some earth where the slides get steeper and end in the abrupt pinnacles and cliffs of the peaks. Around lake level red and white heather are abundant, higher up the yellow replaces the red and in a few places the pink takes the place of the yellow. On the steep s. [south] facing slopes white heather predominates. July 11, 1937. Eva Lake, B.C. [British Columbia] Mouse traps held 1 Clethrionomys but I took a cony, a Blue grouse and a Varied thrush. Hermit thrush and Juncos common. 1 Clark's Crow, 2 pairs fox sparrow, 5 Canada Jays and 1 Golden Eagle seen. We were disturbed repeatedly by Pack rats gnawing under the shack and porcupines gnawing outside it last night, so set out some traps. Mr. [Kenneth] Racey took 2 Synaptomys. July 12, 1937. Eva Lake, B.C. [British Columbia] Weather still fine, saw a coyote hunting marmots, traps held nothing but one squirrel. Before breakfast I climbed to the foot of the cliffs and shot a Leucosticte saw another.
