planetary system, and appears
intended to increase the quantity
of light received from the Sun
which on account of the vast
distance, must be very small.
"Uranus" or as
it is Sometimes called, the
"Georgium Sidus" was discovered
on March 18, 1781, by Doc. Hershel,
though there are many reasons
it had been seen before, but had
been considered as a fixed star.
Its diameter is about 35112
miles; its distance from the sun
upwards of 1800 millions of miles;
and its periodic revolution in
its orbit, is performed in 83 years
and 52 days. This planet is also
attended by 6 satellites, which
were discovered by Doc. Hershall.
The number of Comets
that have been recorded in history,
is very great, amounting to several
hundreds. One of the most remarkable
of these Erratic Bodies is that which
appeared in the years 1531-1607
and 1682, and was predicted by Doc.
Halley to reappear in 1759, which it
did, passing its perihelion, or nearest
distance from the sun on March 12 1759
its periodical revolution being made
in about 76 years. It again appeared
in November 1835 and will appear
again on July 1st 1911.

A Golden Meteorite
A speciman was lately picked up on
the Mohave [Mojave] Desert near Fort Yuma, which
weighs about 1 pound, and carries
free gold, of which about a dollar appears

Measuring Type
The unit of measurement is the square of
the depth of the type, called an "em"
because the letter M was at one time
a square letter. The number of these
squares contained in a line of type in
width, being multiplied by the number
of lines, or Ems, in the depth of the
page or column, gives the number of Ems.
