Cranbrook, B.C. [British Columbia] June 7, 1955
Came up today by plane arriving about
11:30 AM. Met by Glen Smith + lunched
with Glen [Smith] + Joyce [Cowan].
In afternoon proceeded up the E [east] side
of the Kootenay River where we worked
the game range on Pickering Hills, then
proceeded up the north bank of Bull
River on foot as far as the canyon -
about 2 miles.
The lower slopes of the Pickering
Hills have a shrub cover dominated by
Purshia, about 200 ft [feet] above the river
this becomes an association of Purshia,
Amelanchier + Shepherdia, somewhat
higher Ceanothus velutinus becomes an
important element. A shrubby spruce
+ a rose are also abundant. All this
is fire type range, a fir, + ponderosa
+ Larix forest cover had been present
pre fire. Arcostaphylos uvaursi [uva-ursi] is
quite common. Forest regeneration is
almost nonexistent but the forest
service is snag falling + planting.
Grass cover is meager [meagre], I take it to
be Koeleria + Bromus tectorum depending
on site with Calamagrostis in damper
sites + at higher elevations. The entire
area slopes S [south] + W. [west] + is among the
most densely populated game winter
range in B.C. [British Columbia]
