- Cervus canadensis
Brazeau Lake July 31/43 [1943].
Census. At head of Lake 2 [female symbol] 2 yr [word crossed out] calves 1 yearling [female symbol].
at + below cabin 6 [female symbol] 4 calves 1 yearling [female symbol].
Reproduction:- Two cows had 3 calves with
them. This is the first case of twins
I have seen.
Range:- There is a heavy winter elk
population here. They have murdered
the willows - 98% utilization +
no reproduction. No aspen reprod. [reproduction]
all trees highlined + chawed. Poplar
badly browsed, small trees on
hillside killed above 18 inches, larger
trees highlined. Very low grass carry over.
10% +/-
Kills:- Found remains of old bull. All
bones present + not chewed except
skull + fore legs missing. Apparently
animal decomposed where it lay +
parts of it were pulled down the steep
hillside afterwards.

Census:- En route from Brazeau Lake cabin
saw cows.
Kills:- 1 Juvenile cause unknown
1 senile [male symbol] - old age. This animal
had a heavy spike on one side + a broken
spike with brow tine on other.
Range:- Numbers of shed antlers all the way.
Most of them small near Brazeau Lake
larger near here. May indicate early spring movement upstream
Licks:- Sulphur spring 5-6 miles west of here.
