  • Journal 17 broken by outcroppings of rock + rock slides. Very steep + rough. At the top of this slope [Ian McTaggart] Cowan collected a Callospermophilus + a White-tailed Ptarmigan, both males. Careful hunting of the slope failed to produce more Ptarmigan. A golden eagle flew down by us where we were on the hill top. Collected many different species of flowers. At the peak found penstemon just coming into bloom. On examining the crop of the Ptarmigan found it contained about 60% leaves of spring beauty + 40% flowers of white heather along with a few bits of heather stalk. Crossbills have been seen about daily. but generally out of range. July 13/37 [1937] Rain + fog all day. Took a [male symbol] weasel + a ground squirrel in traps set at foot of big rock slide. Shot a [male symbol] Alaska 3 Toed Woodpecker near cabin. This bird was moulting heavily. Left Eva Lake after brunch + along trail near Miller Lake trail saw a large porcupine + at one of the lower slides [Ian McTaggart] Cowan collected two [male symbol] + [female symbol] yearling marmots in very fine dark pelage. These we skinned at once to make easier packing. July 14/37 [1937]. Torrential rain all night + greater part of morning. Packed up specimens + baggage. Mrs [Kenneth] Racey [Kathleen Eileen Louise Stewart] + Stewart [Racey] arrived + we all went down to Revelstoke + put up at the Revelstoke Auto Camp. Shipped
