white cabin at the end
of Settler's road. About half
way is a natural meadow
with the ruins of an old
shack. The only route is
by way of the creek bank.
From here we went
out to Glint's farm at
Sooke a very fine piece
of land running right to
the beach. Raccoons + deer
are very numerous + do
quite a bit of damage.
At mile 25 we turned
off the road again +
went in to Young's Lake
on which Senator [George Henry] Barnard
has a summer cottage.
Red winged blackbirds were
seen + large numbers
of coot fed at the
north end of the lake.
About 1/2 way up the
mountain W [West] of this lake
there is an extensive trail
of tall broom mixed
with copper bush, arbutus
+ jack pine. A large
covey of quail inhabited
this, only about 15 birds
