it with the axe whereupon the wolf turned on him + he ran.
Michel Polk through [word crossed out] threw his axe at it + it ran up to the camps
where it was shot. The dog had no obvious injuries +
survived. Viewers say that the wolf seemed to lack
control of the jaw + was probably unable to bite.
At Reindeer Station Feb [February] 4 wolf came at night +
tangled with the 4 sled dogs but none of the dogs bore
obvious wounds though there was blood on some of
them. Wolf returned next night + was shot. Dogs
died Feb. [February] 19, 20, 22 + March 13. Pup lasted longest.
Symptoms:- Loss of appetite, apparent paralysis[?] of jaw +
throat. Vomiting + foaming at mouth at later stage; mandibular[?]
weakness. No excitement, frenzy or tendency to bite. From
onset of symptoms to death was usually less than 48 hrs. [hours]
On Feb. [February] 4 near Holmes Creek Lee Post + companion
tracking by moonlight, one dog lame + tracking, this dog
was 1/4 mile I believe. It yelped + shortly after a wolf
appeared on the back trail gaining steadily. Lee got axe
+ when it got so close to him hit it on the head,
wolf swerved slightly but made no noise or emotion.
Loped past the sled, on up the trail + past front shed +
attacked the lead dog. Indian shot twice at wolf
+ appeared to get some more hair. Wolf ran on
up trail. About 2 miles further on wolf again appeared
running parallel. It ignored 2 shots fired at it.
First dog was clawed[?] in hind leg by wolf but no
obvious wound. Second dog showed no wound.
On Feb [February] 24 Lees dog became very excited + snappy
+ was put under observation, would not eat. This
lasted 2 days, on 3rd showed improvement on 4th
died. Other dog on March 18 became excited, on the 19th
began to throw itself when in the harness + was shot.
