- Ondatra. [Muskrat]
while others had them large + scrotal.
June 11/47. [1947]
I set out 14 line traps baited with apple
+ camouflaged with weeds.
Tally:- Saw 19 rats between 9 AM + 6 PM.
Some of them were crossing the lakes
+ were 200 yds [yards] from either shore.
At one place 2 were together on
a hollowed out "nest" of weeds on
a floating log. Later in the day
a single rat on the same place
was sleeping in the sun. It did
not here [hear] us until we were
about 10 ft [feet] from it.
Dens:- Almost all the rats seen were
on parts of the lakes with steep
banks rising 4 to 6 ft [feet] above the
present water level. These banks
contained many burrows at different
levels, we watched rats entering +
leaving these.
Another favored shelter just
now consists of the beds of flooded
willows. Many rats were active
in these. In general they
either keep close to the bank or
swim + rest among the willows,
only an occassional [occasional] animal gets itself
out into the open.
