The animal was emaciated, stomach
packed hard + intestine full,
especially colon + rectum. No sign
of inflammation or any
pathological condition of lung,
heart, liver, kidney, spleen
or intestine. No lung worm,
bots or intestinal worms.
A few ticks on ears.
Stomach contents almost
entirely sword fern,
oregon grape + salal.
From a 3 hour survey
I gleaned the following information
The heard [herd] wintering in this
logged off second growth area
of willow, crabapple, alder,
spruce, D. [Douglas] fir, jack pine, balsam.
vaccinium and syringa [word crossed out] Philadelphus
numbers 20-30 head - no old
bulls are known here. Several
other herds winter further
up the river + at other
points about the lake.
Hemlock heavily browsed
Fir once [?], other conifers
not touched.
Sword fern, berberis,
salal + sedge grass provide
winter food. Crabapple
not touched.
