  • 140 Journal QC. [Queen Charlotte] City. June 3/51. [1951] In Climax Picea [underlined] stand in deep shade ground cover 98% moss of 5 or 6 species. Calypso + false lilly [lily] of valley, Wood rush, bedstraw + 2 ferns where some light penetration. Small currant + many spruce seedlings on rotting logs. Forest regrowth initiated by huckleberry, salmonberry, currants, Lonicera, sward fern + in places alder. Hydrosere along active water moves from carex, Isoetes through grass to [word crossed out] + a Vaccinium to [inserted above] crabapple, then alder + spruce - cedar in some places a Juncus forms small communities In late afternoon hiked back old road from 14 mile for a distance of almost 5 miles. Found several marten sets with gull used for bait. Within 1/2 mile began seeing elk sign + on top of ridge came first into open alder stands, crown shaded + with only moss + veratrum beneath Western flycatchers + hermit thrush. This gave way to dense salal patches with open Jack pine scattered
