270 A large Raft
A raft made from 30000 Logs from
25 feet to 200 feet long was toured from
Nova Scotia to New York. It was shaped
like a ship and was 700 feet long,
65 feet Broad, 35 feet deep. It drew
22 feet of water. It had 6 spars
as masts, with by squaresails on 5
and a spanker on the after one. One
Tug the J.B. Morse will tow it.

What a ton of Coal Yeilds
A Ton of coal yeilds about 8000 Cubic
feeet of gas and 1500 pounds of Coke.
The purification of the gas furnishes
45 gallons of Ammonia Water, from
which is obtained sulphate of ammonia
for agricultureal purposes and about 130
pounds of Tar. From the Tar is further
obtained 70 pounds of pitch, 18 pounds
of Creosote, 9 pounds of Naptha, 13
pounds of heavy Oil, 6 pounds of Napthaline
4 pounds of Napthol, [duplicate detail struckthrough]
2 of Alzarine and some more substances.

To Make a forge Bed
Use powdered fire brick, broken
with a hammer. Mix up with Enough
common clay and water to make
the mass stick together, ram it down
not too hard with a rammer and let it

The body of the patient is laid on his
back with clothes loosened and the
mouth and nose wiped, 2 people
put their right hands under the body
at the level of the waist and grasp
Each others hands, then raise the body
until the tips of the fingers and toes
alone touch the ground; count 15
rapidly; then lower the body flat to
the ground and press the Elbows to the
side hard; count 15 again; then raise
the body again for the same length of
time and so Keep on. Let the head
arms and legs dangle freely when you

To Test Eggs
Dissolve 2 ounces Kitchen salt in a pint
of cold water. When a fresh Egg is put
in, it will go right to the bottom. One 1
day old will not quite reach the bottom.
3 days old it will swim in the liquid
and more than 3 days it lay on the water
and project out September 20 1886

Paste to Stick anything
Take 2 ounces of clear gum arabic
one and 1/2 ounces fine Starch, 1/2 ounce
White Sugar. Dissolve the gum arabic in as
much water as a laundress would use for
as much Starch. Mix the starch and Sugar
with the gum. Then cook the mixture in a
water bath (glue pot) until the Starch
becomes clear. The cement should be
as thick as tar and Kept so. A little
camphor Keeps it from spoiling
