Monashee Pass B.C. [British Columbia] June 23. 1937. alt [altitude] 4000'
Very heavy rain during night. Upper
Canadian Zone. Predominant trees Engelmann
Spruce, Western Larch (Tamarac [Tamarack]) Balsams + Lodge Pole Pine. Willow
+ alder thickets along River margin. Rained
off + on all morning. - occasional hale [hail]
storm. Five breeding Pine Grosbeaks seen, three
at camp + two in old shack on hill east of
camp. All were secured by [Ian McTaggart] Cowan + myself
+ all proved to be breeding birds. Both
Olive-backed + Hermit Thrush common +
breeding about here. Breeding Evening Grosbeaks
came about camp during morning - about 12
or 15 of these we secured four 3/[male symbol] + 1/[female symbol]. Set
traps down river all afternoon. Took a [female symbol]
Franklin grouse out of a dense spruce
clump half a mile below camp. It was hiding
in a thick spruce tree about 25 ft [feet] above
ground + when shot it flew down hill + fell
into a small spruce from which I was
able to shake it loose. A pair of
Robin nesting near camp. The [male symbol]
shows very decided white tail markings.
Signs of porcupine on east side of river
+ in evening [Ian McTaggart] Cowan shot a very pale
light coloured animal - a [male symbol]. Thrush,
both Hermit + Olive-backed breeding commonly
about here. Took a male of each species. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan
also took two Hermits. Several Columbian
Ground Squirrels seen + one taken near camp.
