- Cervus canadensis
An electric fence was torn down
first night.
Riggall suggests excluding cattle from
the park and killing elk up to
25% or more of the annual increase
at least. The count to be made
with as great accuracy as possible.
The first elk seen in the Belly
River were cows + calves in the
summer of 1923. Thereafter they
were constantly present.
F.H. Riggall in conversation July 18/45 [1945]
Some of the worst elk damage is now
done in the green feed plots between
August + October. They have tried very
hard to fence the elk out but to no
avail. Rail fences are not practicable
because of the drifting snow.
The last winter or two he has
caned his hay by carting it all
back to the home ranch instead
of stacking on the spot. This is
costly + time consuming. They are
now afraid that in 3 or 4 years
time they will get no or a greatly
reduced first cut of hay because of
the heavy elk grazing in the meadows
in the spring + early summer is
taking all the bottom out + cutting
down the new growth.
On or about April 1 of last year
