256 To Make Cheap Soap
Take a Can of Lye, Throw it into
a gallon of Boiling Water. After
standing 10 hours the Lye will
be clear. Then throw it into a
Boiler with another gallon of boiling
Water. When the contents are
boiling, slowly stir in 4 pounds
of Soap grease. Pour it slowly and
in a thin stream, and Keep on
stirring it well. When well mixed,
let it simmer slowly for 4 hours,
1/2 an hour before taking off, put
in a teaspoonful of salt. When
it appears done, stick a Knife
blade in it and if it drops clear
and ropy and chills quickly, it
is done. Have a was tub ready
with the bottom and sides well wet.
Pour it in and let it set. This
makes 25 #bs [pounds] of Soap clear White.

Large piece of gold
The largest piece found was at
Ballarat Australia in 1859 and
weighed 224 pounds. The second
piece in Calevera County California

Cement
Take best glue 4 oz [ounces], Isinglass 2 oz [ounces]
dissolve in mile Ale in a glass bottle [struckthrough]
glue Kettle till like thin glue.
Then stir in 1/2 oz [ounce] Boiled Linseed Oil.
When cold it looks like India Rubber.
To use dissolve it in a suitable
quantity of oil.

To Corn Beef 257
To 1 gallon water take 1 1/2 pound Salt,
1/2 pound Sugar, 1/2 oz [ounce] Saltpeter, 1/2 oz [ounce]
potash. Boil them together until
all the dirt rises and is skimmed off.
Throw it into a tub to cool, and
when cold pour it over your beef,
and let it stand for 4 weeks. The
meat must be well covered with pickle.
The meat must be at least 2 days
Killed and during the 2 days, it must
be well rubbed [struckthrough] slightly sprinkled
with powdered Saltpetre. November 10 1866
