Alta Lake B.C. [British Columbia] Aug. [August] 12. 1937. Three seen
in first rock slide, on left, just at the beginning
of Nita Lake. Two of these collected a [male symbol] + [female symbol],
The former a very reddish animal whereas
the female is quite dark + blackish under
throat.
Aug. [August] 15. 1937. Alta Lake BC [British Columbia] Two collected in rock slide
N.E. [northeast] end of Lake near Bamfields place.
Several more heard
Aug. [August] 17. 1936. Alta Lake B.C. [British Columbia] Pika heard calling from
rock slide on edge of Lake just above
Archibalds place.
Aug. [August] 18.1937. Alta Lake BC [British Columbia] Six seen on rock slide
in gully half mile east of home [could be Loure?]. Of these
two [female symbol] were collected, one a very old
ad. [adult] animal, #1618, measures 224 m.m. [millimeters]
This pika was busy collecting + picking tips
of vine maple branches + on examining the
nearby vine maple trees found that the
Pikas evidently climb the trees to end of
the tips of small branches. Could see where branches
had been cut up to a height of eight
feet above ground. The ground was
littered with these vine maple cuttings
+ there were several piles laid out to dry
+ others under the rocks. This is the first
instances I have come upon of Pikas
climbing trees.
Aug. [August] 20. 1937. Alta Lake B.C. [British Columbia] At some rock clides this a.m. [morning]
noted that all the vine maple cuttings had been
gathered + removed also that a considerable
quantity of [illegible word], twisted stalk + cedar
bough tips + leaves were being [illegible word] about
slide + amongst tree (dense) at base. In one
[line cut off when scanned, 2 words illegible] where several leaves of the
