- Sorex.
Kwakshua Calvert Island, B.C. [British Columbia] July 13, 1939.
Captured an immature shrew as it
ran from a pile of seaweed
12 ft. [feet] below high tide mark. Captured
a second juvenile in a rock pile
behind the cabin + saw a third that
escaped into a burrow under
a log. All these seen at mid
day or not later than 3 o'clock
on a bright day without rain.
One individual kept captive ate
a small beetle, 3 earthworms, about a cubic
centimetre of squirrel liver + some
juice from a yellow salmonberry
in 12 hours. It died during the
night.

Shrews taken here by Pat [Patrick Waldyve Martin] + Mr [Thomas T.] McCabe
were of both species, mostly adults
The males in a very dark winter
pelage, much darker than on the islands
+ the [female symbol]'s in fresh brown summer
pelage.
