- Ondatra. [underlined]
During the evening we saw 14 rats
swimming in various parts of the lake.
The outer Lake is up to 10-12' [feet] deep
+ vegetated to its centre with submerged
plants of which Pot. [Potamogeton] richardsonii [underlined]
Pot [Potamogeton] pectinatus? [underlined] + Myriophyllum codominate.
The small Pot. [Potamogeton] [underlined] seems to be the
current food preference both here +
in the river lake where there is
an abundance of Equisetum + Carex [all underlined]
along the S [south] end of the lake.
Environment [underlined]:- In evening checked the second
lake west. It is of almost identical
flora + topography to the very
productive #2 L. [lake] W. [west] but has almost
no rat sign in it. We then
checked the large shallow lake
opening off the river 1/2 mile further
west + found it to be absolutely
without rats. No equisetum over
most of this lake, grass + sedge being
almost the only marsh plants
present.
Reproduction:- The squeaking call has
lost its attraction for the [male symbol] rats
+ the two males we have examined
have shown a marked shrinkage
of the seminal vesicles + a flaccid
condition of the testes.
