350 Chickens and how to take
care of them.
A chicken house must be built
so as to Keep out the rain and
the wind. It must be perfectly
weather proof and also well
ventilated. All cracks must
be caulked, and all doors
must fit, so as to only let in the
air at the bottom. Enough air
will come in through the little
hatch at the bottom, Even when
the slide is closed. One inch
boards make a good warm house.
The best plan for ventilation is to
have an opening at the highest
part of the roof, covered with a
wooden "jalousie". A good floor
of hard packed Earth, is very good.
The house must "positively" be
Kept very clean. Bukld the
nests on the floor, and put a
wide shelf over them, so as to
form a top for them, and also
project over in the front. Put
the roosting pole about a foot
above that and about 18 inches
from the wall. All the dirt
will drop on the shelf and
can be cleaned each morning
with a little broom and a can.
Then sprinkle some dry sand
or sifted ashes on the shelf.
Fasten a batten about 3 inches
wide on the bottom of the nests
to Keep the hens from kicking
out the straw.

The Chicken yard 351
The yard must be kept clean,
and raked over often. The
dirt must also be changed, at
least once in 3 months. Keep a
broad shallow box, filled with
dry sifted ashes, for the
hens to clean themselves in.
Cochin or Brahmas will not
fly over a 6 foot fence, but
game, Hamburgs or Bantams,
need at least 10 feet fences.
You need not cut a hens wings
open one wing, and cut only
the first or flight feathers,
which are usually ten in number.
Sitting hens must have a seperate
appartment for themselves, so
the other chickens will not
trouble them.
If you want only Eggs to sell
or to Eat, you do not need a
Rooster, as hens will lay nearly
as well without one, but of
course you cannot hatch the
Eggs.
If you find a hen wanting to
set and you do not wish her
to do so, do not stick her into
cold water, but put her under
a box, out on the hard ground
for a few days. Give her a little
water and scant food and
you can cure her in 3 or 4 days.
In 2 weeks if she is a young
hen, she will lay again--
Cochins can not be cured in
this manner.
