188 Torpedo Warfare
The Chilean Ironclad "Blanca
Encalada" was sunk in Caldera
Bay in Chila on April 23 1891 by
2 torpedo vessels belonging to
Chilano government. She was a
Steel plated cruiser of 2000 tons
and 2000 horse power, carried 16
guns and had one torpedo in her bow
The boats that sunk her were
the Condell and Almirante Lynch,
both built by Laird Bros. [Brothers] of
Whitehead Burkenhead. Each 240 feet long
27 feet 6 beam, 14 feet deep,
Torpedo flush deack, high forecastle and
half poop, drawing 8 feet forward
and 11 feet aft, with a displacement
of 750 tons. Each has a Steel ram
fitted with a bow torpedo discharge
tube, 2 torpedo tubes being also
mounted on Each side of the bow
making 5 in all. They have also 2
Hotckiss [Hotchkiss] 14 pound guns, 6 of the
torpedos missed to hit her, but the
7th one from the Lynch, Struck her
on the starboard side just abaft
the foremast and sunk her in
a few minutes, 100 men were lost.
The torpedo boats have locomotive
boilers, made to work up to 155 #bs [pounds]
steam pressure and triple coumpound [compound]
Engines with cylinders 22, 33 and 49
inches in diameter, 21 inch stroke.
Propellors are magenese [manganese] Bronze, 3
bladed, 8 feet diameter, 9 feet pitch.
Thier full speed is 20 knots

Firing Big Guns
The cost to fire a full round from
one of the British Warship "Victoria"'s
great guns is about $2500. These
are 110 ton guns, the largest in
Big Guns the British Navy. The charge is 900
#bs [pounds] powder and a projectile of
1800 pounds. No full round has
yet been fired. Next to the above
are the 12 1/2 inch guns of the Japanese
Navy, lately tried at a stated cost
for Each round of $2000. The cost
of firing per round for the "Chicago"
8 inch guns using the cheapest Kind
of projectiles namely cast iron shells,
is $65.25, with steel projectiles $212
