- Ovis canadensis.
Whiteman Cabin. June 15/43 [1943]
[James (Jim)] Simpson reports that a small bunch
of sheep used to winter on the
W. [west] face of the 3 Sisters. Judging from
the trails there now they still do so.
Healy Greek. June 17/43 [1943].
About 4 miles up the creek on the
s. [south] face of Bourgeau are some fine
open grassy slopes. Hear [Here] I saw
3 ewes with 2 lambs + at another
point 2 large rams. Both these
groups were feeding while goats
lay or fed nearby.
Healy Creek. June 18/43 [1943].
Climbed the west peak of Mt [Mount] Bourgeau on
the south side. At 7200' found 4 ewes
3 with very young lambs. Two a week or
possibly 2 weeks old, one just born.
All were bedded well out on knolls with
the lamb close up against the lee side
of the ewe. One ewe - the one with
the new born lamb permitted me to
approach to within 20 ft [feet]. I photographed
her as the lamb nursed. Then the entire
group went off a couple of hundred yds [yards] + began to
feed, while the two older lambs frolicked +
chased each other over the rocks.
Moult:- 3 of the ewes were moulting around the
shoulders - the 4th was in winter pelage
Color of kids:- an even warm gray brown with
the tail stripe + neck stripe chocolate.
