- Dr [David Paton] Cuthbertson tells me that the general
balance of staff aimed at in Agric. [Agricultural] Research
+ similar undertakings in Britain is
1 Scientist to 2 Experimental officers (BSc [Bachelor of Sciences]) to
3 Technicians + assistants. The Rowett Staff
is 75 scientists + Exp [Experimental officers] to 85 Technicians.
A Miss Mc [space left blank] I met has
been doing some most interesting work
cataloguing the rumen bacteria. She has
some very fine photomicrographs. I am
interested in the very high repute of Dr [Robert Edward?] Hungate
over here.
Feb [February] 2/53 [1953]. A Royal Society lecture by Mr N.G. [Norman George] Lethlean
on "An Investigation into the design and
performance of electric fish screens + electric
Fish Counters." An excellent paper reporting
on satisfactory operating screens + counters.
Screens use circular electrodes of aluminum
either 1/4" diam [diameter] at 8 inch centres or 2" or 18"
electrodes at up to 7' apart. The paper
has been submitted to the Royal Society for
publication.
Feb [February 5] Arthur Duncan + I discussed the legislative
position of wildlife in Britain. Apparently
a game act promulgated about a century
ago names the game species + prescribes
certain closed season. The new (1952)
