Stokholm [Stockholm], Sept [September] 21/52 [1952]
Am thick in the head tonight with a cold
coming on. The first in 4 years.
Yesterday morning I finished my work at the
museum + then in the afternoon went out
to the Djergarten at Kampenborg again +
spent a most interesting 3 or 4 hours. Two
large stags had 23 + 21 hinds + calves in
addition. From the way one stag was
chasing a yearling [female symbol] I would judge that
yearlings cone in heat. The old stags +
some 3 year olds were continually roaring
but none of the spikes + 2 yr [year] olds. The
stags were continuously on the chase keeping
the younger males away. They would run
at them with a series of rapid grunts.
Today in Stokholm [Stockholm] Zoo I saw a spike chasing
the hinds with the same noise. Contrariwise
when a mature stag showed interest in a female
it was with head low + outstretched neck +
tongue flicking far out.
