Blue Creek cabin. Aug. [August] 18/43 [1943]
Stormy day, snow down to 7500'
Came on here from Mowitch Shelter
distance about 16 miles, time 5 hours.
The route lay through spruce +
pine forests, winter range for
moose + caribou
Game seen:- 1 elk [female symbol] on deer creek
13 goat on Ancient Wall
Warden Bob Jones reports up to 24
sheep winter along west slope of
Ancient Wall near natural arch
+ south. Also a small band
of 12 or 15 goats. Caribou pass down
to Blue Creek valley in numbers
in fall + winter No elk here
yet. A very few deer try to
winter here + on south Fork + as
far up as Hoodo [Hoodoo] Creek on the Snake
Indian. Wolves + wolverine abundant

Heavy frost at night, light showers
in late afternoon. Came on 10 miles
to this camp. Valley at first pine
forest on stony ridges + sidehill but
above canyon opens out into a
wide grassy river flat with
willows dominating the woody vegetation
some shepherdia + cinquefoil. Belt
of Pine timber on each side with
scattered spruces + balsam. No
