- Sciurus July 27 [1939]
Squirrels have been seen on most of the Islands
visited so far. They have been collected on
Spider, Calvert + Campbell. I have found the
coastal squirrels to be extraordinarily shy
+ quiet in comparison to those encountered
in the interior of southern Vancouver Island.
Repeatedly I have attempted to shoot them
after hearing them scold + only once, on Campbell
been successful in collecting one. so far.
To-day I heard one scolding violently in bush
I rowed to the shore directly opposite the spot
where he was + quietly stepped into the
bush to stalk him, but as soon as I took
two steps in the dry salal he shut up
+ could not be induced to show himself
or to resumed scolding by any means within
my power. This is only one instance of many
similar ones.
