- and has given me some interesting
information on the Tuk [Tuktoyaktuk] eskimos.
There are about 12 families + 1
Indian family. The latter traps on
Eskimo Lakes + does quite well. The
Huskies are afraid of him + keep
away from his area. They make
no attempt to put in wood or
dog feed in the summer + in
consequence have to spend a good
part of the winter getting firewood
+ much of their money buying dog
food. They are superstitious + afraid
of winter travel consequently are
very indifferent trappers. Only 3 or
4 of them have even whale-boats.
+ consequently cannot move around
much. The women are poor walkers,
most of them bow legged from being
back carried too long as children.
They almost never leave their houses
during the winter months + both
they + their children are very unhealthy.
Impetigo, tonsilitis, mumps, measles,
pneumonia, tubercular meningitis +
tuberculosis have been killers during
the last 8 years one baby died of
a mouth infection similar to thrush.
Doctor [J.] Harvey speaks of extreme
malnutrition in the groups last
February.
