- Banff. Apr. [April] 27/43 [1943]
Rabbit tracks abundant, 1 lynx track, 1 black
bear track (at city dump), 1 chipmunk, 1 ground-
squirrel.
On reflection the presence of uneaten elk
caracases [carcasses] in the Bow valley + Spray valley
is ample evidence of abundant coyote food.
April 28/43 uneaten
Weather fine, bright sun in morning, cloudy
with NE. [northeast] wind in afternoon. With warden
E. [Ernest] Stenton drove up Tunnel Mt [Mountain], along its
length then down the road to the East
Gate with frequent sorties off the main
road both north + south. In afternoon
hiked about 4 miles up the Carrot River
to see some kills found in the last
week of February.
Killed + examined a lone deer
in Banff.
Range conditions:- On Tunnel Mt [Mountain] the
conditions are not too bad. There is
evidence of previous heavy overgrazing
but though the more exposed points
are bare + somewhat eroded there
is grass of an eatable height away
from these bluffs. Everywhere, however
there is an absence of young aspen
+ what few willows existed are now
dead. There is no browse line on
the conifers (pine, spruce, + fir) + the junipers
of neither species are browsed.
