  • Long-tailed Jaeger. 68 [degree symbol] 31' [minutes], 135 [degree symbol], 55' [minutes] June 27/47 [1947]. Found a nest containing a newly hatched chick + collected it + both parents. The chick had left the nest + was scrambling about over the lichens. Nest a hollow 1 1/2" [inches] deep 6" [inches] across in the lichen on a dry knoll in a wet meadow occupied by 3 pairs of Hudsonian curlew. The adults were very active flying much like falcons + with a superlative ability to hover or to remain motionless, hanging on the air. I found the shell 100 yds [yards] from the nest, a dull olive color lightly spotted with medium brown. Crop contents [male symbol] 5 Coleoptera - saved 1 Lepidoptera larva 2 cranberries [female symbol] 30 cranberries 2 Coleoptera + parts of others 1 spider leg bones of a young mouse. Reindeer Station July 16 to 19. 5 Jaegers taken + as many as 21 seen at one time. no young or nests. Stomach contents 100% cranberries. Kidliut Bay. July 25/47 [1947] One long tailed Jaeger seen - 36 mi [miles] S. [south] Aklavik Aug [August] 8/47 [1947] A young jaeger flew past the house today.
