Aklavik. July 18/47 [1947].
Left Reindeer Station at 7:30 this morning
+ arrived Aklavik just before 6 P.M.
Clear hot, windless day. Very little
bird life in evidence hereabout or
on the route followed today. Gulls
at Aklavik have increased noticeably.
In the evening had a chat with
Dr [J.] Harvey, He has just returned from
his trip up river giving out treaty
money + is most upset with the
conditions he has found. He says
that the majority of Indians are on
the verge of starvation, no money
+ only fish to eat + none too
much of that. During the break
up many had nothing for two
weeks or so. He states that conditions
are particularly bad from Arctic Red
River to Good Hope + Norman. He
states that moose are to be had
but the natives are afraid to take
them. He also states that beaver
are reported by many natives to
be overabundant in the area
around Good Hope + that some
dead animals have been found,
+ others so poor as to be almost
useless for food. He is of the
opinion that trap line registration
will be of relatively little use
