- July 8/65. [1965] Sointula, B.C.
Joyce and I drove up from Victoria with
Logan + Margaret Mayhew. Flew by B.C. Airlines
Kelsey Bay to Sointula - about 1/2 hour - good
weather for the flight.
July 9/65. [1965] Kent Island, Walker Group.
Left Sointula at 0900 + ran out to Pultney [Pulteney]
Point then on course 300 directly to the
Deserters group where we anchored off the
Indian village, went ashore + later explored
southward into a salicornia lagoon.
After lunch proceeded on to anchor
for the night in the lagoon at S [south] end of
Kent Island. Went ashore at 7.5' [foot] tide in
late afternoon. Extensive soft muddy sand
shallows at head of lagoon. Saw 4 raccoons
+ some mink sign. Looked carefully in the
grassy area at head of lagoon for Microtus [underlined]
+ deer sign. No sign of either. Under some
downed logs there were land snails that
appeared to have been chewed, perhaps by
Peromyscus or Sorex.
Racoon dung was entirely of large marine
isopods.
Heavy migration of Northern phalaropes.
2-3 thousand feeding of [off] S [south] tip of Deserters group + 12 - 15
more flocks of 20-50 seen in flight.
