- Cervus canadensis
15 mile Cabin - Spray River. June 18/43 [1943].
Enroute in saw 24 elk
15 indet. [indeterminate] 3 bulls, 5 cows, 1 calf.
Same locality June 11/43 [1943].
Saw 24 elk, all but 2 of them bulls,
breeding + resting along grassy slopes on
east side of valley. By 5 P.M all but a
very few were feeding.
Spray Lakes. June 12/43 [1943]
Leaving the Spray cabin this morning
we saw 8 elk + 4 large males + 4 [female symbol]'s?
Saw several very large shed antlers.
Elk were numerous in the burn but
much less so in the timber. However
they had been all the way along the
trail. A pellet count taken from
about 4 miles out of the cabin + periodically
to the second cabin indicated
Moose 27, elk 9, deer 1.
Saw 2 large bulls at our campsite
+ much elk sign on the Bryant Cr. [Creek] trail
The presence of elk hair in coyote
droppings indicates that elk wintered
in here.
Simpson tells me that in the end
of October 1940 there were elk bugling
at the head of the Alexandra River.
