Watchman Lake, Thompson Pass, Banff Park. July 28. 45 [1945]
Have not yet seen any elk here but
there are fresh tracks + fresh old
droppings widely distributed over the alplands
Banff, Alta. [Alberta] Aug. [August] 4, 1945.
Today saw a newborn calf elk. The cow
was most concerned, chased a dog away from it +
later when the calf bleated as we closed in on it
she came on the trot + with hair bristling
+ tongue hanging from the right side of her
mouth she came for us + caused us to give
ground.
The calf swam well when forced into
the river but quickly came ashore. When
at first entered the river it bleated shrilly + the
cow immediately entered the water, swam to it
+ carefully herded it to shore. When it waded
in the water she kept downstream of it
