rye + rather scant. Lots of bearberry.
Not a good range even though it
looks good from a distance- Sheep
sign present but nothing to indicate
more than just a small band.
Cairn Pass. July 11/44 [1944]
From the cabin counted 51 ewes +
or young males. This bunch had at least
10 lambs with it. They were on
the mesa + along the escarpment
opposite (E [east]) of us.
On 6 yr [year] ram came down off the E. [east]
hill + crossed over the valley.

Today counted 96 rams
26 ewes
11 lambs
32 unsexed ewes + young.
Two of the rams crossed the valley from
the east to the west + later George [Camp]
saw a ewe + lamb cross at the
same point.
In general the rams were just where
we saw them last year + were
predominantly of 10 years + under. Only
3 seen today were definitely 10 +. I wonder
if something decimated the older stock.
or cleared large parts of the pop. [population]
about 10 years ago.
Predators:- The whistlers set up an outcry
at two coyotes. At once a band of
