- Cervus canadensis [underlined]
Field B.C. [British Columbia] Aug. [August] 1, 1944.
According to warden reports a few
elk began to appear along the
Kicking Horse Valley just before 1926.
In 1926 there was the big fire
lower down the Kootenay +
quite a lot of elk appeared -
a few have wintered ever
since. Elk began coming
in from Banff in 1936 or 37
+ did not winter in the eastern
part of Yoho until 1939-40.
Last winter about 15 head
stayed around Wapta Lake.
Others were present in the immediate
vicinity of Field. There is now
good hunting just outside
the park on its western fringe.
From what I have seen today
the elk here are still well below
danger level - Near Leanchail
there is some chawing of aspens
but nothing at all serious in
extent. The deep snow - 4 to 5 ft [feet]
at Leanchail - 10-11 at Field helps
prevent serious damage to the
shrubs + will also limit the
carrying capacity to so low a
level that I think starvation
conditions will prevail before
there is much [illegible word crossed out] damage
