We had a taxi meet them at Leuchers. We had
a very interesting day together looking over the
sight of the town + got home at about 8:30

Oct. [October] 22. Mrs Adams took me down to the Royal Dick
Veterinary College where I met Dr [Frank] Alexander,
recently from the Rowett Institute at Aberdeen
+ now Pharmacologist here. He showed me
his 3 experimental horses with fistulas into
the digestive tract + discussed some of his
ideas + findings. He impressed me as an excellent
research man with a keen + original mind.
One of his horses has 3 fistulas respectively
into the upper colon, lower colon and
cecum. His latest fistula plug consists of a
3/8" tube of Alcothene, an easily workable
plastic made by I.C.I. [Imperial Chemical Industries] He flanges the lower
end, puts on 2 rubber washers on inch + 1/2 in
diameter, + thread the outer end. After the operation
+ the suturing of the gut wall to the body wall
he inserts the tube, draws the incision up tight
around it + screws on alcothene washer
+ lock nut then a screw on cap is applied
