  • Journal 4 June 24. 1937. Weather cleared. Skinned all morning + in pm [afternoon] went to slide 4 1/2 mi. [miles] west of camp + on west side of summit. Saw in all five pikas + between us secured three also two [male symbol] Callospermophilus l. [lateralis], one an ad. [adult] + the other sub.ad. [subadult]. Collected a [female symbol] Columbian Chickadee + four Can. [Canada] Jays at slide. Jays were 3/[male symbol] + 1/[female symbol]. Two were young birds. June 25. 1937. Skinned all day. Weather fine. Visited Rock Slide. Took a juv [juvenile] "Cally" [Callospermophilus]. Three chipmunks in trap [Ian McTaggart] Cowan caught 2 ad [adult] [male symbol] gopher at foot of slide all 3 pikas. June 26. 1937. Went up the valley about a mile along Keefer Lake Trail + saw + hiked with two gold miners who have an 80 acre lease. Their names. [illegible name] + Harvey. The former an American from Calif [California] + the latter from Lumby B.C. [British Columbia] Collected the following birds - song sparrows [male symbol] + [female symbol] (Inexpectata [Inexspectata]) 2. [male symbol] MacGillivray Warbler 1. [male symbol] Traill Flycatcher 1. [male symbol] Ruby Cr [Crowned] Kinglet 1. Hermit Thrush [female symbol] 1. Valley above camp much dryer + more open than below camp with a great deal more bird + animal life. June 27. 1927 [1937] My day off. During morning picked up traps below camp + collected a [male symbol] bdg [breeding] Pine Grosbeak at old shack in hill, was eating coarse earth + grit recently excavated by a Cal. [Califoria] Ground Squirrel. Later found this grit held in two small sacks on floor of mouth of [word crossed out] on either side of tongue. Specimen preserved. Also took Hermit Thrush 1. Olive backed thrush 1. MacGillivray Warbler 1. Evening Grosbeak 1. + L.T. [Long-tailed] Chickadee 1
