- Ursus horribilis
Jasper. May 5, 1944
Wells has 2 big bears + at least
2 small ones around the area
near his cabin. The two small
ones walked into the yard the
other day. + the big one, two
weeks ago removed an entire elk
carcase [carcass] from an island in the
river. I measured his tracks
on the hard, dusty road, 13 1/2" [inches]
hind foot.
This bear gnawed + pawed a
tree in which Wells had hung
his meat. The bite marks are
8 ft [feet] 4 in. [inches] from the base.
Kills:- This bear stayed active until
December + killed a cow moose
+ a cow + large bull elk within
a short distance of the cabin.
In each case the bear lay right
beside the kill until it was cleaned
up. There were wolves around + they
had circled the bear + kill but
had not touched it.
Wells saw him at the cow elk +
it paid no attention to him even
when he rode his horse round
it within 20 or 30 yards. It was
sitting up beside the kill.
